South Korea has one of the lowest rates of religious affiliation in the world, despite having a rich religious history. Contributing factors include the influence of Confucianism on individualism, social pressure to conform, modernization and economic growth leading to traditional beliefs losing their appeal, family background and negative experiences with organized religion. The role of education and globalization have also impacted religious attitudes. Younger generations may be less likely to follow traditional beliefs and practices. Despite these challenges, many Koreans still find meaning in their spiritual lives through organized religion or personal belief systems.
